Coverage Dates Change Request

Important Notice!

Summer Term 2026 is the last academic term that DCIS will be the iMED health insurance provider for UBC. For Winter Term 1 2026 UBC has contracted with a new insurance company. Because of this change, international students assessed the iMED health insurance fee for a program in Summer Term 2026 (under group policy PM8686125) are subject to the following Coverage Date Change Request parameters:

The deadline for all Coverage Dates Change Requests is August 31, 2026.
For students assessed the 3-month iMED health insurance fee in Summer Term 2026:
1. August 31, 2026 is the latest date of arrival in Canada that can qualify you for an iMED Coverage Dates Change Request
2. If your arrival in Canada will be September 1, 2026 or later you must contact UBC International Student Advising to inquire about getting enrolled with UBC’s new iMED health insurance provider.
For Visiting International Research Students (VIRS) assessed a 4, 5, or 6-month iMED health insurance fee in Summer Term 2026:
1. If you will arrive in Canada in August 2026, your Coverage Dates Change Request for a 4, 5, or 6-month coverage period will be handed on a case-by-case basis subject to review with UBC Go Global and the insurance company.
2. If you will arrive in Canada September 1, 2026 or later you must contact UBC International Student Advising to inquire about getting enrolled with UBC’s new iMED health insurance provider.

To apply to add an eligible dependent to your iMED policy submit the
Add eligible family to iMED form (PDF) to DCIS prior to your dependent’s date of arrival in Canada.

Who is the Coverage Dates Change Form for?

New international students who enter Canada in a calendar month later than the iMED effective date issued to you, you must submit the Coverage Dates Change Form (with proof of your arrival date) so that your iMED coverage dates align with your waiting period for the BC Medical Services Plan (MSP).

Note: If you enter Canada outside BC, and do not enter BC within the same calendar month as your date of entry into Canada, then you may need to purchase an iMED Extension in order to be covered for your full BC MSP waiting period.

Visiting International Research Students (VIRS)

If your VIRS program dates fall later than the iMED coverage dates issued to you, then you may qualify for a iMED Coverage Dates Change. (You also may need to extend iMED if your VIRS program will go beyond the iMED coverage period issued to you).

Who is not eligible for a Coverage Dates Change?

One-Term Exchange Students, you have a fixed coverage period aligned with your one-term exchange program, and so the Coverage Dates Change Form does not apply to you. Even one-term exchange students who arrive in Canada the calendar month after their iMED insurance effective date do not qualify for a change of coverage dates.

When to complete the Coverage Dates Change Form

Submit your Coverage Dates Change Form (with required proof documents) to DCIS once you have a booked/confirmed date of travel to Canada.

How long will it take to receive my updated iMED Card?

The processing time for Coverage Date Change requests is normally between 2 to 6 weeks after all required documents are received. In Winter Term 1 the timeline can be longer due to the volume of requests.

Note:

If you arrive in Canada within your original iMED coverage period you may use your original iMED Card while waiting for your replacement iMED Card. Your policy number will remain the same.

A. You will arrive in Canada in a calendar month AFTER the effective date shown on your iMED Card,

and

B. You will arrive in Canada within the same academic term that you were assessed the iMED health insurance fee by UBC.

The latest date that an iMED effective date may be changed to (using this form) is the end of the academic term that you were assessed your iMED fee or earlier depending on the type and term of your first ever UBC program.
