Opting Out

Below are the three eligible opt out categories: Approved opt outs will result in UBC removing the iMED fee from your student fees.

Category 1

The following students are eligible to Opt Out of the iMED program through DCIS:

  • Students who have coverage on a Canadian Provincial or Territorial health plan that commenced on or before the start date of their iMED plan and is valid for the entire iMED coverage period
  • Students who are already covered on the iMED plan.

To Opt Out for one of these two reasons complete DCIS iMED Opt Out Form (PDF), and submit it with required supporting documents to DCIS.

Category 1 Opt Out Requests (with support documentation) must be received by DCIS by UBC’s add/drop deadline (last day to drop courses without a W) as per the UBC Calendar.

The processing time will take about 2 to 8 weeks.

Category 2

Students who are sponsored by a UBC recognized organization:

Students whose program of study is funded by a UBC-recognized third party (government or organization) that has provided a mandatory hospital and medical insurance plan as part of its funding may Opt Out directly through the UBC iMED coordinator.

Complete the UBC UBC iMED Opt Out Form (PDF), and send it to the UBC iMED coordinator at the contact information listed on the form.

Category 2 Opt Out Requests (with support documentation) must be received by UBC by UBC’s add/drop deadline (last day to drop courses without a W) as per the UBC Calendar.

The processing time will take about 2 to 8 weeks.

Category 3

Students who complete their entire UBC program outside Canada:

Download the UBC iMED Self-Declaration Form (PDF) and send the completed form to the iMED Coordinator through the International Student Advising online form.
